Job Description: After School Program Leaders (part time)

This is a unique opportunity to have a positive impact on the well-being of young people in West Hants. Many young people do not have the opportunity to take part in extracurricular activities due to barriers including cost and accessibility. The After School Program is free to participants and aims to introduce young people to options for active lifestyles in West Hants. The objective is to provide opportunities for physical activity in a fun, high energy, safe environment, where no pre-requisite skills are required. It is encouraged that activities, whether structured or unstructured will provide moderate to vigorous physically active for at least one hour during each session. We are looking for someone who can relate well with the participants, encourage participation and have fun while remaining a positive role model and ensuring a safe environment for play.

- This is a 34 week term position running from approximately Mid-September to May 31.
- Normal work week can average 4-10 hours per week depending upon availability.
- Hours of work are typically during the time period of 2:15-4:30.
- The incumbent is expected to work primarily from a home office when planning activities and deliver them onsite at the school(s) or at activity sites.
- Potential to work with the West Hants Middle School programs during lunch time or after school time period depending upon incumbent’s availability.

Responsibilities:
- Provide a variety of activities for a maximum of 20 youth.
- Organize equipment for the day’s activity.
- Be at the school and ready to greet the participants when classes end and program begins.
- Lead activities.
- Oversee any Assistant Program Leader, assign duties as necessary and role model leadership skills.
- Contact school and Active Communities Programmer by 9:00 AM when unable to attend that day.
- Refer behaviour issues to the Principal or designate when necessary.
- Organize presentations if desired for the participants in collaboration with Active Communities Programmer.
- Keep Program binder up-to-date, including the Activity Tracking form, parent/caregiver sign in & sign out forms.
- Provide proof of Child Abuse Registry and Criminal Record checks, prior to the program commencing.

Wage Info:
- $15/hour (including a half hour before and after the program for prep and cleanup).
- 1 hour a week will be allowed for prep outside of the program to plan activities.
- Payment will be biweekly with income tax deducted as directed.
- Time sheets are to be submitted weekly to the Active Communities Programmer by fax or email.
- The Program Leader will not be paid when the program is cancelled due to illness, storms or in-services.
