Job Description

Personal Care

The most demanding duty you will have as a home support worker is to provide personal care. Depending on the type of home you work in and the needs of your client, these duties will vary. These duties can range from:

  • Helping the client dress in the morning and undress at night to having to help them into the shower or bathtub.
  • The client may require help getting on and off the toilet. You may even have to help change disposable under garments. Personal care may be required, this also includes helping them deal with any other hygiene issues such as brushing teeth, clipping nails, applying lotion and even scratching backs if necessary. Personal care is the most basic and time consuming of all duties of a home support worker.

The amount of housekeeping you will need to perform naturally varies daily.  These can include:

  • Sorting and putting out garbage, scrub floors, hand wash dishes, laundry, wash windows and all other household duties, associated with daily living.
  • Cooking
  • Baking

The housekeeping duty should take up less of your day than the personal care. However, it is still vital for your client's needs to be filled, so you should always do exactly what she says as long as it is in within reason.

Providing your client with companionship is perhaps the most important duty you will have as a care home support worker. Many of your clients will be elderly people who have lost their spouse and many of the other people they love. Many of them will be mentally challenged and find it difficult to make friends. You will be their constant companion throughout their days and weeks. You should always maintain a friendly demeanour with your clients and always engage them in conversation if they want to talk. Talk about your personal life as much as you feel comfortable and you will be able to get closer to your clients. Smile and laugh with them and tell jokes. Take them for walks and stimulate them with creative activities. Companionship is hard to find for people who are on their own, you should always be willing to be a friend.

A level-headed approach is required for this post, excellent organizational skills and self-motivation able to work on own, but equally as part of a team.

Will also require a clean criminal background check.

Please Note:   All staff regardless of job description is required to undergo the special Alzheimer’s Society Training Course.

Ability to speak Patios will be an asset.

Closing date of applications is January 31st.
